The Catholic community in Vietnam is in mourning following the passing of Cardinal Jean-Baptiste Pham Minh Man, the Archbishop Emeritus of Ho Chi Minh City, who died on Sunday at the age of 92. The Cardinal had been living a quiet and humble life at the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center since his retirement in 2014, though his health had declined significantly in recent years due to old age and underlying illnesses. His death was marked by the solemn tolling of bells for 10 minutes across parish churches throughout the region as a final farewell.

Born on March 5, 1934, in the Mekong Delta province of Ca Mau, the Cardinal's journey toward the priesthood involved extensive formation across Southeast Asia. His studies took him from seminaries in An Giang and Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to philosophy studies in Saigon during the mid-1950s. After being ordained a priest in 1965 at Can Tho Cathedral, he dedicated much of his early career to education, eventually traveling to the United States to study administration at Loyola University from 1968 to 1971.

Upon his return to Vietnam, he took on significant leadership roles within the church's academic institutions, serving as the rector of A Thanh Quy Minor Seminary and later becoming the founding rector of Thanh Quy Major Seminary in 1988. His rise within the hierarchy was formalized in 1993 when Pope John Paul II appointed him Auxiliary Bishop of the My Tho Diocese. By 1998, he was appointed Archbishop of Ho Chi Minh City, a position he held during a period of significant growth and change for the local church.

The pinnacle of his ecclesiastical career occurred on October 21, 2003, when he was elevated to the rank of Cardinal in Rome. This appointment allowed him to represent the Vietnamese Catholic community on a global stage, serving as a member of several important Vatican congregations, including those focused on Divine Worship and the Evangelization of Peoples. Despite these high-ranking international responsibilities, he remained deeply connected to his roots in the Mekong Delta and the pastoral needs of his archdiocese.

In the days leading up to the 2026 Lunar New Year, the Cardinal's health reached a critical stage, leading to his admission to Cho Ray Hospital. After receiving intensive care, he was discharged on Sunday afternoon to return to the pastoral center he called home. He passed away peacefully just two hours after his arrival. While the Archdiocese prepares to announce formal funeral arrangements, his legacy is remembered as one of intellectual rigor, administrative skill, and a persistent commitment to a simple, faith-driven life.
