New Zealand to tighten immigration rules amid crime concerns New Tab ↗

The New Zealand government is set to introduce a new legislative bill this Wednesday aimed at significantly tightening the country’s immigration, asylum, and deportation frameworks. Immigration Minister Erica Stanford stated that these changes are designed to provide "proportionate tools" to combat migrant exploitation, serious criminal offending by non-citizens, and "bad-faith" asylum claims that undermine the integrity of the system.

One of the most substantial shifts in the proposed law involves the window for deportation. Currently, residents are liable for deportation for serious crimes committed within 10 years of arrival; the new bill seeks to double that period to 20 years. Additionally, the maximum penalty for exploiting migrant workers would increase from seven to 10 years in prison, signaling a harsher stance against employers who abuse the system.

The legislation also grants authorities broader powers to act when false or misleading information is discovered during the immigration process. This push reflects a global trend where governments are facing increasing political pressure to deport non-citizens convicted of violent or organized crimes while attempting to preserve public support for legitimate refugee protections.

In a related move, the government is tabling a parliamentary paper to overhaul asylum protocols. A key proposal would allow immigration officials to consider serious crimes committed by a claimant within New Zealand before a final decision is made on their refugee status. According to Minister Stanford, 14 known refugee claimants have previously been convicted of high-level offenses in New Zealand, including murder, arson, and serious sexual crimes.

Finally, the bill targets individuals deemed to be acting in bad faith. This includes those who intentionally seek media publicity to bolster their asylum claims or those who repeatedly skip mandatory biometric appointments without a valid reason. Because the current government holds a majority in parliament, the bill is expected to pass through its three required readings and become law.

Trump seeks to delay meeting with China's Xi by 'a month or so' New Tab ↗

President Donald Trump has requested a one-month delay for his highly anticipated state visit to China, originally scheduled for late March and early April 2026. The postponement of the meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping is a direct result of the ongoing conflict in Iran, which has shifted the administration's immediate focus toward the military campaign known as "Operation Epic Fury." While the White House cited the need for the President to remain in Washington to coordinate the war effort, the move adds a new layer of complexity to the already strained relationship between the world's two largest economies.

A central point of tension involves the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime corridor where approximately 20% of the world's oil transits daily. President Trump has called on several nations, specifically China, to assist in securing the passage of vessels after Iranian threats to disrupt traffic. Thus far, Beijing—the world’s largest oil importer—has not directly responded to these requests. U.S. Energy Department data indicates that while overall Middle Eastern exports have dropped by 60% since the war began, Iranian crude has continued to flow toward China at near-normal rates.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the travel dates, high-level diplomatic preparations between the two nations are continuing. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently met with Chinese Vice-Premier He Lifeng in Paris to lay the groundwork for potential agreements. These discussions have shown signs of progress, with Chinese officials expressing openness to increasing purchases of U.S. agricultural products, including beef and poultry, and engaging in talks regarding the global supply of rare earth minerals.

The delay of the summit highlights the significant impact the Middle East crisis is having on U.S. foreign policy. White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt reaffirmed that while the President looks forward to visiting China, his "number-one priority" remains the success of the current military operations. Chinese officials have maintained a measured tone, noting that head-of-state diplomacy remains "irreplaceable" for providing strategic guidance to the bilateral relationship, even as the specific timeline for the meeting remains fluid.

South Korea's Lee calls for safety, readiness against 'terror' acts at BTS concert New Tab ↗

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung has declared that security and safety must be the "top priority" for the upcoming BTS comeback concert scheduled for March 21 in central Seoul. During a cabinet meeting on March 17, the President emphasized the need for total readiness, specifically citing the potential for "acts of terror" given the massive scale of the event. The concert marks the group's first new album release in over three years and is expected to be one of the largest public gatherings in the capital since the 2002 World Cup.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety estimates that the free event could draw up to 260,000 people to the heart of Seoul. While 22,000 fans hold official free tickets for designated areas, Interior Minister Yun Ho-jung confirmed that the surrounding spaces from Gwanghwamun Square to City Hall will remain open to the general public. This sprawling, one-hour performance will also be broadcast live on Netflix to 190 countries, placing a global spotlight on South Korea’s ability to manage large-scale crowd safety.

To manage the immense logistics of the day, authorities have announced a massive security deployment. Approximately 4,800 police officers and 3,400 municipal officials from the city of Seoul will be stationed across the district. Their primary responsibilities include directing the flow of the crowd, maintaining emergency response corridors, and implementing rigorous anti-terrorism protocols to protect both local attendees and international visitors.

The heightened scrutiny comes as BTS prepares to embark on a highly anticipated global tour in April. For the South Korean government, the March 21 concert serves as a critical test of public order and safety infrastructure. With hundreds of thousands expected to flood the city center, officials are working to ensure that the celebration of the group’s return remains secure and free of incidents.

The hidden physical and mental costs of working through lunch New Tab ↗

The habit of working through lunch has evolved into a global phenomenon, with recent surveys indicating that a significant portion of the workforce in both Singapore and the United States regularly skips their midday break. Driven by mounting workloads, family responsibilities, and a fear of being perceived as unproductive, many employees choose to eat at their desks or bypass meals entirely. However, health experts warn that this approach is biologically counterproductive and can lead to a cycle of physical and mental decline.

When employees attempt to multitask by answering emails while eating, the body remains in a stressed "work mode" rather than transitioning into the "rest and digest" state. This physiological state slows the production of essential stomach acids and enzymes, which impairs nutrient absorption and can lead to digestive distress. Furthermore, those who eat at their desks are statistically more likely to choose convenient, nutritionally void foods, resulting in afternoon energy crashes and a tendency to overeat during dinner.

The mental consequences of skipping lunch are equally damaging, often leading to long-term burnout and a loss of clarity. While workers may feel they are saving time, the lack of a mental reset actually decreases focus and lowers overall productivity. In fact, data shows that over 80% of employees admit that taking a proper meal break significantly boosts their output. Scientific evidence supports this, noting that a physical break from the workstation stabilizes glucose levels and sharpens decision-making.

To combat these negative effects, dietitians recommend prioritizing a well-balanced lunch that includes a mix of carbohydrates, proteins, and healthy fats. This combination supports sustained energy throughout the afternoon and reduces the reliance on excessive caffeine or unhealthy snacks. For those with exceptionally tight schedules, experts suggest keeping a "rescue pack" of simple, nutrient-dense items like oats, peanut butter, and berries to prevent the irritability and focus issues caused by an empty stomach.

Ultimately, the most effective way to maintain high performance is to view the lunch break as a functional necessity rather than a luxury. Taking even a short time to step away from the screen allows the parasympathetic nervous system to activate, which is essential for creative thinking and emotional regulation. By establishing a consistent routine that prioritizes refueling, workers can build a more sustainable and productive professional life.

11 foreigners face caning in Singapore after overstaying their visas New Tab ↗

In a significant joint operation, Singapore’s Immigration and Checkpoints Authority (ICA) and the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) arrested eleven Nepalese men for overstaying their visit passes and working illegally. The crackdown, which took place on March 10, 2026, targeted several food and beverage outlets suspected of employing immigration offenders. The suspects, aged between 21 and 43, now face severe legal consequences under Singapore’s strict migration and labor laws.

The penalties for overstaying in Singapore are among the most stringent in the world. If convicted, these individuals face up to six months in prison and a mandatory minimum of three strokes of the cane. In addition to physical punishment and jail time, offenders are typically deported and permanently barred from re-entering the country once their sentences are served.

The investigation has also expanded to include those who facilitated the illegal employment. Two Singaporean men are currently under investigation for allegedly hiring some of the offenders, while several work permit and S Pass holders are being scrutinized for potential labor violations. Under Singaporean law, employers who hire illegal immigrants face mandatory jail time of at least six months and significant fines, reflecting the government's zero-tolerance approach to unauthorized labor.

This raid marks the second major immigration enforcement action in Singapore within a single month, following a similar operation in the Hougang area on March 3 that led to the arrest of 14 individuals. Authorities have reiterated that both "knowing" and "negligent" harboring of immigration offenders carry heavy penalties, including imprisonment and fines, to ensure that all residents and businesses rigorously verify the legal status of foreign workers.

Beyond immediate criminal charges, businesses found in violation of the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act risk fines of up to S$30,000 per charge and may be permanently banned from hiring foreign staff. These high-stakes consequences serve as a stark reminder for the food and beverage industry to maintain strict compliance with work pass regulations as authorities continue their intensified surveillance of the sector.

US to slash fee by over 80% for renouncing citizenship New Tab ↗

The United States government has announced a significant reduction in the cost for citizens living abroad to formally renounce their nationality, slashing the consular fee by more than 80%. Starting April 13, 2026, the cost will drop from US$2,350 to US$450. This decision, published in the Federal Register, effectively reverses a 2015 price hike and returns the administrative fee to its original 2010 level.

The move is being specifically hailed by "Accidental Americans"—individuals born in the U.S. or to U.S. parents who have lived most of their lives abroad—who often face complex and burdensome tax obligations. Because the U.S. is one of the few nations that taxes based on citizenship rather than residency, these individuals are required to file extensive yearly declarations and disclose details of their foreign bank accounts under the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA).

In its official notice, the government acknowledged that the fee reduction was influenced by "not insignificant anecdotal evidence" regarding the tax-related difficulties faced by U.S. nationals residing overseas. Many expatriates have reported that their U.S. citizenship makes it difficult to open local bank accounts or manage personal finances due to the rigorous reporting requirements imposed on foreign financial institutions.

The Association of Accidental Americans (AAA), a Paris-based advocacy group, claimed the price drop as a major victory resulting from years of legal action and public pressure. The group’s leadership noted that while the lower fee is a positive step, it is only a "first victory" in a larger effort to address the unique challenges of the U.S. global tax system.

By lowering the financial barrier to renunciation, the administration is providing a more accessible path for those who feel the administrative and financial costs of maintaining U.S. citizenship outweigh the benefits. However, the process remains a serious legal step with permanent consequences, including the loss of U.S. protection abroad and the right to live or work in the United States without a visa.

These 20 college majors lead to lowest salaries after graduation in US New Tab ↗

A recent analysis from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, utilizing 2024 U.S. Census Bureau data, highlights a significant wage gap between various college majors. Graduates in liberal arts, theology, and education sectors consistently report some of the lowest median earnings within the first five years of their careers, often falling below the individual national median income of $45,140. In contrast, technical fields like engineering command much higher starting pay, with most graduates earning at least $75,000 early on.

The disparity is partly attributed to the sectors in which these graduates are employed. Education professionals often work for state and local governments, where salary growth typically trails behind the private sector. Similarly, many liberal arts and social service graduates enter non-profits or public institutions—industr ies that historically pay less than high-demand technical fields. While teaching and service roles offer benefits like job security and pensions, studies show these professionals generally earn less than peers with similar qualifications in other industries.

The data also reveals that while some majors start with low pay, they see significant growth over time, while others remain stagnant. For example, pharmacy graduates report the lowest early-career median salary at $40,000, but this figure more than doubles to $85,000 by mid-career. It is important to note that this specific dataset only tracks those with a bachelor's degree; licensed pharmacists, who require a doctoral degree, earn significantly more. Conversely, education-related majors remain at the bottom of the pay scale even for workers aged 35 to 45, with early childhood education reporting a mid-career median of just $52,000.

Engineering continues to be the most lucrative path for those prioritizing high earnings. By mid-career, most engineering professionals see their salaries exceed $100,000, with chemical engineering leading the group at a median of approximately $135,000 annually. This contrast underscores the long-term financial impact of major selection, particularly in fields where advanced degrees or private-sector demand drive substantial income growth over time.

221 people under probe for involvement in scams with losses over $5 million New Tab ↗

The Singapore Police Force (SPF) has launched a massive investigation into 221 suspected scammers and money mules following a high-impact, two-week enforcement operation. Conducted between February 26 and March 11, 2026, the crackdown involved officers from the Commercial Affairs Department and all seven police land divisions. The operation targeted individuals linked to more than 1,080 scam cases, which resulted in combined victim losses of over SGD 5.3 million (US$4.1 million).

The suspects, comprising 136 men and 85 women, represent a surprisingly broad demographic, with ages ranging from 17 to 81. These individuals are believed to be involved in a variety of fraudulent schemes, including e-commerce scams, friend impersonation, and fraudulent job or investment offers. Investigators are currently looking into several potential charges, including cheating, money laundering, and the provision of illegal payment services.

In a move to decisively curb the rising tide of fraud, Singapore has introduced some of the world's most stringent penalties for scam-related crimes. Under legislation that took effect at the end of 2025, scammers and those who recruit for syndicates now face mandatory caning of six to 24 strokes upon conviction. Furthermore, "scam mules"—those who assist by laundering proceeds or providing access to their SIM cards and Singpass credentials—may face up to 12 strokes of the cane.

Beyond physical and custodial sentences, the authorities are employing a new Facility Restriction Framework to neutralize the threat posed by these offenders. This framework allows the police to impose long-term restrictions on banking services and mobile line subscriptions for those involved in money mule activities. By cutting off access to the very tools used to facilitate scams, the government aims to disrupt the operational capacity of both local and international criminal syndicates.

This operation is part of an ongoing, intensified effort to protect the public from increasingly sophisticated financial crimes. While authorities continue to recover millions in stolen funds, they emphasize that the most effective defense remains a skeptical and informed public. Citizens are urged to use official tools like the ScamShield app and to remember that government officials will never solicit money or sensitive banking details over the phone.

Apple Watch gây bỏng cổ tay người dùng, Apple im lặng suốt 6 tháng New Tab ↗

Vết bỏng vì Apple Watch, Apple đổ lỗi do da nhạy cảm để né trách nhiệm?

New Tab ↗
